Here are two things a backhoe can be used for during a construction project.

The preparation of the plot where a building's foundation will be created

Construction teams will often utilise backhoes when they are preparing the area of a site on which they'll be creating a building's foundation. For example, this equipment can be used to clear a plot of land of existing, unwanted structures (like old sheds or barns) as well as debris and vegetation so that there is a clear open space in which the construction team can begin to build the new structure.

Additionally, a backhoe can dig into the ground and pick up large amounts of soil. Because of this, it is sometimes used in place of an excavator to excavate the soil in which a foundation needs to be laid. The precision and speed of a typical backhoe's hydraulic system can allow it to dig and pick up heavy loads of soil in a very efficient and methodical manner, which makes it easier for the construction team to quickly create the correct-sized excavation.

A backhoe may also be used during this part of a building project if the soil contains a lot of boulders and large rocks, that might compromise the stability of the foundation if they are not removed. The backhoe can quickly cut into the soil (even if it is very tightly compacted), pick up these boulders and rocks, and transport them to the site's refuse area.

The spreading and grading of loose materials over a large piece of land

A backhoe can also be used during a construction project, for the distribution of loose materials (such as soil, mulch, gravel, etc.) over a large piece of land. For example, if a construction team is building a long driveway and the top layer of this structure will be made up of gravel, they may utilise a backhoe to spread this gravel over the driveway. The backhoe can safely hold large amounts of the grave in its bucket and, when the operator then tilts the bucket, can then spill the contents out in a fairly controlled manner, that will allow the gravel to be evenly distributed across the entire driveway.

After the equipment has been used to spread these materials over the designated area, it can then be used for the grading of the distributed gravel. The operator may do this by adjusting the angle of the backhoe's bucket so that its edges lightly scrape the top layer of the ground, in such a way that the gravel becomes properly compacted and any small lumps or irregularities in this top layer are evened out.
